Multiclos vaccine is a multivalent clostridial vaccine from MSD Animal Health, formulated for the active immunisation of healthy cattle and sheep across South African production systems. It protects against blackleg, malignant oedema (gas gangrene), bacillary haemoglobinuria, black disease (infectious necrotic hepatitis), diarrhoea, haemorrhagic enterotoxaemia and pulpy kidney disease.

Clostridial organisms are ubiquitous in soil and in the gut of healthy ruminants, which makes sudden death losses a persistent risk on veld and in feedlots alike. The Multiclos vaccine offers a broad-spectrum, cost-effective foundation for any herd or flock health programme, particularly ahead of high-risk periods such as lambing, calving, rapid pasture flush or feedlot entry.

Multiclos is a water-based injectable including an alum precipitate, presented as a yellowish liquid with an off-white precipitate that resuspends on shaking. It is administered subcutaneously and is simple to incorporate into routine handling events.

Immunity is established within three to four weeks after inoculation and should last approximately one year, except for the Clostridium haemolyticum and Clostridium novyi fractions, which require a booster every five to six months.

Key Benefits

  • Broad clostridial cover in a single injection across seven disease presentations
  • Cross-protection benefit: although Clostridium perfringens type B is not a component, immunity may be provided against beta and epsilon toxins produced by type B, through the combined type C and type D fractions.
  • Approximately 12 months’ duration of immunity for most fractions
  • Suitable for both cattle and sheep, simplifying stock holding on mixed enterprises
  • Convenient subcutaneous administration during routine handling
  • Short 21-day meat withdrawal period

Directions For Use
USE ONLY AS DIRECTED. SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE. Vaccinate by subcutaneous injection.

  Dose
Cattle 5 ml subcutaneously
Sheep 3 ml subcutaneously

Previously unvaccinated animals should receive two doses, three to four weeks apart. Revaccinate annually prior to periods of extreme risk or parturition. For Clostridium haemolyticum and Clostridium novyi, administer a booster every five to six months. Animals vaccinated before three months of age should be revaccinated at weaning or at four to six months of age.

Precautions: use only sterile needles and properly sterilised vaccinators, changing needles as frequently as possible. Where fleece is long, ensure the needle has penetrated the skin before injecting. Do not mix Multiclos with other veterinary medicinal products.

Storage / Other Instructions
Store between 2 °C and 8 °C in a refrigerator. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Cold chain must be maintained in transit. Destroy any unused vaccine and dispose of empty containers and disposable equipment after use in accordance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008). KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN, UNINFORMED PERSONS AND ANIMALS.

  • FOR ANIMAL USE ONLY / SLEGS VIR DIEREGEBRUIK
  • Reg. No. G3392 (Act 36/1947).
  • Withdrawal period: do not slaughter animals for human consumption within 21 days after vaccination.
  • Vaccinate only healthy cattle and sheep.
  • As with all vaccines, occasional hypersensitivity reactions may occur. In such cases, appropriate treatment such as adrenaline and/or antihistamines should be administered without delay.
  • Absolute immunity cannot be guaranteed in all animals. Consult a veterinarian regarding additional control measures rather than relying on the vaccine alone.
  • Usually no marked reaction follows vaccination, although transient swelling may appear at the site of inoculation and some animals may show a moderate rise in temperature for one or two days.
  • Although extensively tested, failure may ensue for a wide range of reasons. If this is suspected, seek veterinary advice and notify the registration holder.
